Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) are like "Black Boxes" known from airplanes. They enable the ship owner or accident investigators to review procedures and hear the instructions in the moments before an incident and after to help identify the root cause of any accident.

The new Kelvin Hughes VDR meets the latest performance standards and technical requirements as defined in MSC.333(90) and IEC 61996-1 Ed. 2 including more flexibility, functionality and features to the operator and offers high quality, reliability and easy installation.

The VDR collects data from the sensors on board the vessel, radar images, audio from the bridge and stores it simultaneously in an internal long storage medium and an externally mounted Float Free and/or Fixed Capsules. The Capsules are tamperproof units. The Fixed capsule is designed to withstand the extreme shock, impact, pressure and heat associated with a maritime incident. The Float Free Capsule is fitted with a hydrostatic release. The recorded data can be downloaded from the long storage medium on the vessel allowing the stored data to be replayed by the owners or authorities for investigative purposes. The playback software enables full voyage analysis and data replay functions.

On the bridge the navigator can use the small touch panel to get a clear overview off the data being recorded, the status of each recording medium, the images being recorded, but also the critical dates for replacing the hydrostatic release, UPS batteries and the beacon expiry date.

Kelvin Hughes can also offer a cost-effective upgrade of your older Kelvin Hughes VDR/S-VDR to our new generation VDR/S-VDR, utilizing many of the existing parts of the system, such as microphones, and cabling, providing an easy installation, reduced installation cost, ultra reliable and robust design exceeding all the latest standards.
